Since 1991, the Kona Manta Rays have been meticulously documented and identified based on their unique spot patterns on the ventral side. The first identified Kona Manta Ray, Lefty, has paved the way for over 300 distinct rays cataloged to date.

For those intrigued by these magnificent creatures, the Manta Ray Tracker App is a valuable tool available on the iOS App Store. Through this app, users can access a comprehensive range of features:
<ul>
<li>Download the complete list of identified Manta Rays and seamlessly refresh the list with recently added profiles.</li>
<li>Explore detailed photos and descriptions of each ray, along with recent sightings of individual rays.</li>
<li>Access sighting information from popular night dive locations, including data on peak and off-peak manta ray sightings at these sites.</li>
<li>Discover mantas by those most frequently sighted and browse through user contributions to sightings.</li>
</ul>

Enthusiasts are encouraged to contribute their own manta photos to the sighting database. If identification poses a challenge, the team is on hand to assist in classifying acceptable images. Submitting photos of unidentified mantas allows users to name them, subsequently adding them to the ID catalog.

By accumulating a vast collection of photos for each individual manta, the hope is to eventually enable automatic individual recognition based on images.

The database thrives on input from Kona Manta Ray guides but seeks additional data sources. Whether it's sharing data from your guide or contributing personal observational photos, all reports are welcomed. Identified mantas or total sightings, every piece of information is valuable in expanding research horizons.

Sightings can be recorded along the Kona Coast using various methods such as the built-in GPS on iOS devices, mapping tools, or manual entry of GPS coordinates without requiring an internet connection. Users can submit multiple sightings with specific details for each and send reports once back in internet range.
